Edmond de Pury was a student of Marc Gabriel Charles Gleyre (French, 1808-1874), in Paris. Amongst his student-peers were the likes of Jean Leon Gérôme, Jean-Louis Hamon, Auguste Renoir, Emile David, Claude Monet, Jean Frédérick Bazille and Alfred Sisley.
He studied Italian peasants in Rome, Capri and Venice, and worked extensively in Italy. He married an artist, Marie Amélie Mathilde Wagniere. She studied with Frank Duveneck, (American, 1848-1919) in Florence and also studied in Paris. Marie was known for her many views of Venice.
Edmond Jean de Pury exhibited in Paris, and was awarded a medal in 1889 at the Exposition Universelle. He produced a large body of etchings, and his works have often been reproduced in illustrated magazines. His painting of the great artist / composer Wagner was completed two years before the composers’ death.
