Giuseppe Castiglione, (1829-1908)

Giuseppe Castiglione was born in Naples, Italy. He moved to Paris, France at an early stage in his artistic career and started exhibiting his paintings in 1869. It is thought that he lived and studied in the schools of Paris. He is known for his portrait and genre paintings.

He began exhibiting in Paris and Turin as a member of the Sociétaire des Artistes. Castiglione was awarded honorable mention at the 1861 Salon Exhibition. He debuted at the Paris Salon exhibition of 1869 with a medal. Mr. Castiglione won a medal at the Philadelphia Exposition in 1876, where he exhibited “Visiting the Cardinal Uncle” and “The Warrants”. At Paris, in 1877, was “The Terrace of the Palace Royal at Naples” and “A Duel without Witnesses”; in 1878, “Portrait of Pandolfini of the Theater des Italians” and the “Lesson to the Paroquet”. At the Paris Exposition, in 1878, he exhibited “A View of Haddon Hall, England, invaded by soldiers of Cromwell” and Visiting the Cardinal Uncle. At the l’Exposition Universelle of 1900, Castiglione was awarded a Bronze medal. Giuseppe Castiglione was awarded one of France’s most prized honors in 1893. He was decorated into the Légion d’honneur.
